Bread Machine Recipes – The Natural Mommy (1)

Oooh, I have so many good bread recipes. But there is one that rises to the top as the dominant alpha male and continues to assert his authority by snarling viciously at the lesser breads.

Viciously.

Introducing…

Bread Machine Recipes – The Natural Mommy (2)
The Awesome Bread

(a.k.a. Half-Whole Wheat Honey Oatmeal Bread with Butter Crust)

(See the splatter spots on the napkin? It’s from all the butter.)

(And yes, I took that picture on my living room floor. It’s the only place in our apartment that gets enough sunlight for a decent picture.)

Ingredients:
(And I am reciting these from memory because I make this just about every day.)
1 c warm water
2 Tbs oil
1/4 c honey
1 1/2 c whole wheat flour
1 1/2 c bread flour
1/2 c oatmeal (quick or old-fashioned)
1 tsp salt
2 tsp active dry yeast

Bread Machine Instructions:
Dump in all ingredients in order listed (wet first, ending in yeast). Do make sure, though, that you tap and settle the flour before adding yeast. Otherwise, it will crack during the initial resting phase and the yeast will fall through into the water and activate too early and then your bread will be a slightly smaller size.

Set machine on whole wheat setting, press start, walk away. (Do come back to make sure that after five minutes of kneading the dough is not a) falling apart due to lack of moisture or b) sticking to the walls because of excessive moisture. Add water or flour respectively.)

Amish Style Instructions (no bread machine):
Go here. Order a bread machine. Then backtrack to previous step.

Sorry, wish I could be more help. Maybe someone will be nice and tell you how to make bread by hand in the comments. I have nice readers like that.

Hey, you’re not done yet. Step away from the comments and come back here.

Skip ahead 3 hours and 43 minutes. The bread machine beeps, your stomach growls, and your salivary glands are performing in a way that would put Pavlov’s dogs to shame.

Transfer bread from pan to cooling rack. While bread is still piping hot, melt 1 Tbs butter and brush it over the crust. (Will be messy. Paper towels help.)

Let bread cool either until completely cool (per bread machine instruction book) or until you can successfully cut it without it being completely flattened and misshaped.

Then eat. Eat and curse the name of Atkins and anyone else who wants to tell you carbs are bad.

Do you have a bread machine recipe you want to share? Blog it and put your link below! Just make sure you’re linking to your recipe post not to your homepage. That’s a sure way to lose a good recipe.

Stop stop stop!!! I don’t have a bread machine and didn’t win ANY Amazon or Target GC in the bloggy giveaway! So I can’t buy one either! And my husband just ran over my son’s bike so I can’t ask for one for mother’s day either since that money will be towards buying a new bike! Aack!

I had a recipe for your chicken leftover recipe swap all ready to go, but I guess you aren’t doing that this week. 🙁

I have some “quick” bread recipes. Can I share one of those?

here is how you can make my recipe for the honey wheat by hand (which i did until i got my machine about a week or two ago)
    dissolve yeast in warm water
    add honey and stir well
mix in whole wheat flour, oat bran, salt and oil. work in all purp flour gradually (the pain)
turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 10-15 minutes (the other pain)
when dough is smooth and elastic, place it in a well oiled bowl and turn it several times to coat. cover with a damp cloth and let rise in warm place for about 45 minutes…or until doubled. punch down dough and shape into 2 loaves. place into well-greased pans and let rise again until it is about 1 inch above pans. bake at 375 for 30 minutes.

    Oh, yum.

This sounds absolutely delicious! (And yeah, the butter spots on the napkin totally win me over, too!)

I don’t have a bread machine…but I just put it on my wish list for my birthday. If I get it, I hope I remember to come back and try this recipe very first!!

I do all my bread Amish style. The bread making helps to work off those carbs from all the bread eating.

This might be a dumb question, but can I substitute bread flour for the wheat flour?

Beth @ The Natural Mommyon May 9, 2008 at 12:16 am

Sara – You sure can. Your loaf will be fluffier and taller. Just like comparing white to wheat bread. The original recipe was actually for all bread flour.

Personally, I need to make mine a bit more filling with the wheat flour or I eat the whole loaf in one sitting.

Yum! I just made some yesterday. I did the kneeding in the bread maching, then took it out to let it do a final rise in the bread pan. I don’t like the shape of the bread machine loaves.

I also had to use all purpose flour as I didn’t have ww or bread flour.

It still turned out yummy. In fact, I’m making a second loaf today. I guess you can guess what happened to the first!!

My bread machine doesn’t have a whole wheat setting. It’s my mom’s old machine. My full ww flour loaves turn out pretty squatty. It takes about 2 hrs 15 minutes for a full cycle on medium crust setting with my machine. What can I do with the machine to make it allow the ww bread to rise longer?

So I’m now waiting for my first recipe of this bread to cool. I can’t wait to taste it. I did do something different with the butter though. Instead of melting it and brushing it on, I just took the stick of cold butter and rubbed it on the crust (which melted instantly, of course). Much less mess and takes less time too! It smells gooooooood.
